Personal branding, that is, having an online presence, matters somewhat in almost all jobs, but mostly in marketing. Why is this?
Definition of marketing:
Oxford Languages - ‘the activity or business of promoting and selling products or services, including market research and advertising.’
Cambridge Dictionary- ‘the business activity that involves finding out what customers want, using that information to design products and services, and selling them effectively.
Marketing is ultimately promoting something. Marketers, especially when job searching, are selling themselves - the way they present their CV, LinkedIn profile, and tone of voice all matter.
While diversity is also a key factor in the decision-making process for some employers, culture and values are typically the driving forces.
Employers work hard to understand who they are, what they stand for, and who is most likely to align with their team.
This isn’t about pre-judgements; this is about understanding the market that marketers are in.
When creating a CV and sending a cover letter, this is your chance! It doesn't have to be perfect - it’s better to be transparent. Then sooner or later, that company will find you!
Gone are the days when employees used to hide behind a large corporate brand; nowadays, employees are much more creative in their own unique contributions to a company's brand, and they share a positive momentum towards the mission they choose to serve.
Be strong, bold, and beautiful, and don’t be afraid to be creative when marketing yourself to employers.
Likewise, when looking for employees, consider those who have the courage to stand out from the crowd; they may, in fact, be the disruptors and big thinkers that your business truly needs.
